Aloe vera na criopreservação do sêmen de tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Melo-Maciel,M.A.P.; Leite-Castro,L.V.; Leite,J.S.; Oliveira,M.S.; Almeida-Monteiro,P.S.; Nunes,J.F.; Salmito-Vanderley,C.S.B..
This study aimed to evaluate the extract of Aloe vera (AV) associated or not with 10% Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) in cryopreservation of tambaqui semen. For the formation of the pools (n= 14), 30 males were hormonally induced twice. Each pool had the objective motility, curvilinear velocity, straight-line velocity, average path velocity and morphology analyzed before and after cryopreservation of semen. The means for cryopreservation were constituted of Powder Coconut Water-104 diluent added DMSO and/or AV (5 or 10%). After cryopreservation, motility, velocities and morphology were reduced significantly when compared to fresh semen. For sperm motility the best treatment was that using only DMSO (20,86±8,31) and DMSO + 5% AV (15.71±9.77). For the velocities,...

Heart rate variability and arrhythmias evaluated with Holter in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.S.; Muzzi,R.A.L.; Araújo,R.B.; Muzzi,L.A.L.; Ferreira,D.F.; Silva,E.F..
Cardiac diseases promote alterations in the autonomic control of the heart, leading to an increase in heart rate and, as a result, a decrease in heart rate variability (HRV).The aim of this study was to evaluate if the development of heart failure secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) concurs with changes in autonomic modulation of heart rhythm which are assessed by long electrocardiography examination (Holter). Dogs were evaluated by clinical examination and echocardiography in order to be categorized into the following groups: Control (healthy; n=6), DMVD (disease without heart failure; n=8), and DMVD heart failure (disease with heart failure; n=13). Arrhythmias and frequency domain HRV were determined by Holter. Diseased animals, when...

Hepatitis C virus infection among Brazilian hemophiliacs: a virological, clinical and epidemiological study BJMBR
Carmo,R.A.; Oliveira,G.C.; Guimarães,M.D.C.; Oliveira,M.S.; Lima,A.A.; Buzek,S.C.; Corrêa-Oliveira,R.; Rocha,M.O.C..
We determined and analyzed risk factors of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected Brazilian hemophiliacs according to their virological, clinical and epidemiological characteristics. A cross-sectional and retrospective study of 469 hemophiliacs was carried out at a Brazilian blood center starting in October 1997. The prevalence of HCV infection, HCV genotypes and factors associated with HCV RNA detection was determined. The seroprevalence of anti-HCV antibodies (ELISA-3.0) was 44.6% (209/469). Virological, clinical and epidemiological assessments were completed for 162 positive patients. There were seven (4.3%) anti-HCV seroconversions between October 1992 and October 1997. During the same period, 40.8% of the positive anti-HCV hemophiliacs had abnormal alanine...

Influência da qualidade micotoxicológica e nutricional de híbridos de milho no custo da ração de frangos de corte Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Mallmann,A.O.; Dilkin,P.; Vidal,J.K.; Meinerz,G.R.; Oliveira,M.S.; Mallmann,C.A..

Texture analysis of computed tomography images of acute ischemic stroke patients BJMBR
Oliveira,M.S.; Fernandes,P.T.; Avelar,W.M.; Santos,S.L.M.; Castellano,G.; Li,L.M..
Computed tomography (CT) images are routinely used to assess ischemic brain stroke in the acute phase. They can provide important clues about whether to treat the patient by thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator. However, in the acute phase, the lesions may be difficult to detect in the images using standard visual analysis. The objective of the present study was to determine if texture analysis techniques applied to CT images of stroke patients could differentiate between normal tissue and affected areas that usually go unperceived under visual analysis. We performed a pilot study in which texture analysis, based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix, was applied to the CT brain images of 5 patients and of 5 control subjects and the results were...

Use of discriminant analysis based on echocardiography for classification of congestive heart failure in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,A.C.; Muzzi,R.A.L.; Muzzi,L.A.L.; Ferreira,D.F.; Oberlender,G.; Oliveira,M.S.; Nogueira,R.B.; Ticle,L.B..
Mixomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is one of the most common cardiac abnormalities in dogs and humans that can lead to cardiac heart failure (CHF). Its diagnosis remains based on echocardiography and clinical signs. However, the early diagnose of MMVD can contribute to a better prognosis and avoid CHF. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and echocardiographic presence of CHF in dogs with MMVD in combination with a statistical model as a mathematical tool. For this purpose, dogs were divided into three groups (healthy; MMVD without CHF; and MMVD with CHF), according the clinical, radiographic and echocardiographic evaluation findings. Thus, linear discriminant functions were obtained by analyzing the variables weight, body...
